Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The team's persistent issues represent a a "serious issue" and the football regulator is seeking powers to investigate clubs in such situations, its new chair the official has declared.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four supporter groups connected to the Championship side in recent days.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in this season, with the club delaying salary disbursements on several different times, including in September.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the historic institutions for the English game and this week we have met fan representatives.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will permit us to bring Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they need to be investigated and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has failed to complete a sale with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in earlier this year led to sanctions by the English Football League (EFL) in summer, stopping Wednesday from completing any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in late summer.

Regulator's Perspective

The chairman stated: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a community organization that has represented their community in many cases.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the followers."

When asked if the oversight body could require an proprietor to divest a club if they are judged inappropriate, Kogan said: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we collect the information and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But Kogan stressed that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the regulator would prefer to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is start getting involved with an individual club, an individual owner, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of the sport, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the way which they've been managing their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The regulator engaged delegates from multiple organizations to explain the responsibilities of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"This position carries substantial significance, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the significant advances achieved necessary will vanish rapidly," the regulator warned.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money coming into football and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on challenges and obviously, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

The Premier League opposed the creation of a regulator because of concerns about detrimental effects on the Premier League's sporting equality, but Kogan said: "I'm absolutely committed to the success and growth as an commercial operation of the Premier League.

"As someone who appreciates the worry about compromising the Premier League as a premium product of the nation. But simultaneously, if you consult with top flight officials after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, indeed, they have been informing us confidentially they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "comprehensive investigation" by the public appointments commissioner after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in 2020.

The chairman contributed funds to government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," Kogan said.

"I am no longer involved in any type of partisan engagement."
